The Spring Break Economy
Spring break is right around the corner, and soon places like Panama City, Lake Havasu, and South Padre Island will be filling up with spring breakers. You might think that spring break drives the economy in these popular places, but that is not the case.
Besides benefitting small businesses and bars, the only industry that consistently benefits from spring break is law enforcement. March in Panama City isn’t the peak of revenue – it’s the peak of crime. March is actually one of its lowest months of revenue for Texas, Arizona, and Florida. Sales taxes drop lower than any other time of the year. This makes sense when we consider that most spring breakers are college students who are low in disposable income but high in stress.
To avoid the conglomerate of rowdy spring breakers, here are some places you can go instead that are within budget and offer a similar experience. Opt for Tybee Island, right outside of Savannah, Georgia, over Panama City. Lake Havasu can be traded for Bryce Canyon or Palm Springs. But if the beach is a must, drive north from South Padre Island to find the quiet beaches of Padre Island National Seashore.
